Warshaw Burstein Partner Eric Wrubel Addresses Women’s Bar Association of New York about Landmark Family Law Case

Warshaw Burstein, LLP partner Eric Wrubel spoke at The Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York on June 2 about the landmark family case he litigated, Brooke S.B. v. Elizabeth A.C.C.

Wrubel, chair of the firm’s Family and Matrimonial Group, spoke as part of the association’s 2018 convention CLE series. His session was entitled “Tripping Down the Rabbit Hole: The Brooke S.B. Aftermath.”

The convention is being held at The Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Wrubel recently spoke on the same topic at The Attorney for the Child Conference – NYC at New York Law School. That event was presented by the Office of Court Administration in collaboration with the Appellate Division, First, Second, Third and Fourth Departments.

Wrubel was lead appellate counsel for the Attorney for the Child in the seminal case at New York’s highest court, the Court of Appeals. Wrubel convinced the Court to overrule two of its prior decisions which limited the definition of a “parent” in New York to an individual related to a child biologically or through adoption.

He successfully argued to the New York Court of Appeals that the definition of “parent” in New York be expanded so that non-biological, non-adoptive individuals who are parents would have a pathway to securing their custodial rights.
